Jameel Jaffer of the American Civil Liberties Union will be speaking tomorrow afternoon at the Islamic Institute of Orange County. The free event will focus on “confronting U.S. sponsored torture.” The Bush Administration may be gone from office and a few of the regime’s “war on terror” policies have been reversed by President Obama, but by in large, full transparency and accountability for crimes of torture is severely lacking.
Jaffer, who co-authored the book “Administration of Torture,” will be addressing this very political context tomorrow in Anaheim as the extraordinary rendition program continues to this day while torture photos and reports on ethics investigations into ‘memo’ authors are upheld from release. Nations can not just ‘move on’ from dark periods of their history. They must confront them with nothing less than true justice.
