The music world is saddened today by the loss of one its most unique contemporary voices, Lhasa de Sela. The Montreal based musician lost her battle with breast cancer on New Year’s Day at the age of 37. Word came by way of the singer’s official website which also noted the heart wrenching news that a “projected album of the songs of Victor Jara and Violeta Parra would remain unrealized.” Lhasa de Sela’s interpretation of the Chilean folkloric legends would have been immense, but as it were such songs are now only to be sung in the heavens. It’s easy to see why Lhasa’s death is so tragic as the song ‘Rising’ off her latest album released last April is exemplary of and demonstrates the melodic soulfulness of her music, the depth of her lyrics and the sensual huskiness of her voice…
